KrackedDevs is the most sophisticated AI builder ecosystem in Malaysia.

Not the biggest.

There are programmes here with a hundred times our reach and a thousand times our budget.

But reach and sophistication are different problems. Malaysia has only solved one of them.

Let me tell you a story about steel.

Somerset

A few years ago I was working on the talent side of Hinkley Point C, the Nuclear Power Station Britain is building in Somerset. The project needed more than a thousand steel fixers.

We were short by hundreds.

Not short of applicants. Short of people who existed on any list, anywhere. You cannot advertise your way out of that. There is nobody left to see the advert.

So we stopped searching harder and rebuilt the search itself. We automated the repetitive, conversational parts of screening so humans could spend their hours on judgement instead of admin. Then we did the part I still think about. We stopped looking for steel fixers entirely. We started looking for people in adjacent trades who could already do most of the job and had never once been told so. Welders. Fabricators. People one skill away. We ran campaigns across the whole country to reach them, explained the opportunity, explained the gap, and got them to site, where three months of upskilling took them the rest of the way.

The industry has a name for these people. Dark talent. Capable, employable, invisible. Not because they lack ability. Because nobody ever built a route to them.

I spent five years doing versions of this across the UK. More than twenty companies. Marketers, engineers, project managers, directors, teachers. Later I went freelance and sold the same thing to recruitment agencies. Data and automation. Find people faster, match them better, waste less of everyone's life.

Every single shortage came down to the same sentence.

The talent already existed. The pathway did not.

Where I got it Wrong

I should be honest about the other half of those five years.

I placed people who did not work out. I hired the wrong people myself. You can do every hour of due diligence available and still miss, because a CV is a claim, and I had no reliable way to test claims. Interviews measure how well a person interviews. Certificates measure attendance.

Sit with that accountability long enough and something shifts. You stop believing in credentials.

You start believing in evidence.

Coming Home

I left all of it. The career, the network, the stable version of my life. I wanted family, food, culture and faith, and I wanted to know what building something in Malaysia actually felt like.

So I got married. Moved with nothing but a dream and trust in God. Took whatever work came, a lot of it through family, while building a startup on the side. An AI Recruiter that could call, vet and interview thousands of candidates in minutes. It got funded. It was aimed at UK companies.

Then one day I realised something uncomfortable. I was pointing my one real skill at the wrong country.

My Own Brother

Here is why I believe this works, and it is not a statistic.

My brother was doing Lazada deliveries and manual labour. No technical background. No development experience. Nobody screening a pile of CVs would have picked him out for anything.

He learned to build with AI in a few months. Today he runs a significant part of Kracked Devs.

Nothing changed about his ability. His ability was there the whole time. What changed was exposure and opportunity. And he is not rare. I have now met hundreds of Malaysians in exactly that position, people who were in warehouses and kitchens and shops a year ago and now make a living building things.

Somerset again. Different country. Same dark talent.

Except this time it is my own family, and my own country, and the stakes are national.

The Window

On 29 June the Prime Minister launched the Malaysia Digital Action Plan 2030. Its stated aim is to move Malaysia from being mainly a user of digital technology to a producer of homegrown innovation, with targets of 30% of GDP from the digital economy and 500,000 high value jobs. Beside it sits the National AI Action Plan 2026 to 2030 and a new national entity, AI Malaysia, built to run it. [Cadeproject, The Edge Malaysia]

Strip away the pillars and one sentence is doing all the work. Stop consuming technology. Start producing it.

Correct diagnosis. Hardest item on the list. Least infrastructure behind it. Everything else on that page can be procured.

Producers cannot.

What is Currently Happening

Look at what is moving. Microsoft and its partners targeting 800,000 people. IBM SkillsBuild at 41,000. Tens of thousands of Coursera passes a quarter. TalentCorp taking Jelajah AI MyMahir across 60 constituencies.

I have worked inside this machinery.

The intent is real. Somebody had to go first. None of what follows is a criticism of it.

But read what those numbers measure. Registrations. Attendance. Certificates. Hours.

Awareness. All of it.

A certificate is not a product. Attendance is not a builder. We are on our way to having the best informed population in Southeast Asia with no reliable way of knowing who among them can ship.

The Statistics

ISIS Malaysia and the World Bank estimate that 4.2 million Malaysian workers, 28% of the labour force, are highly exposed to generative AI, with another 2.5 million close behind. Nearly half the workforce has at least 40% of its tasks already substitutable in principle. repec

The most exposed sectors read like a bank statement.

Insurance and takaful at 91.8%.

Real estate at 87.4%.

And the line that should stop you scrolling. ISIS's economics director says it is the "jobs in the middle", the ones holding up large sections of the Malaysian middle class, that face the most displacement risk, while manual work at the bottom and specialist work at the top stay comparatively insulated. malaymail

The floor is protected. The ceiling is protected. The middle is not.

The middle is most of us.

The same researchers mapped our training landscape, HRD Corp, MyFutureJobs, Learn for Free, programme after programme, and warned of fragmentation and duplication, with ordinary people struggling to navigate it all. Their recommendation was a single pathway that guides a person based on where they actually are and where they want to go. ISIS

Read that again. The country's own policy institute has described the missing layer. Not more content.

A pathway.

And in January the Communications Minister launched the Centre for Responsible Technology, a joint body between ISIS and MCMC, whose security question is how a nation keeps its autonomy when technology becomes "a field of strategic contest". The Steel Fixers, again

One more thing about those steel fixers, and it is the part nobody wants to say out loud.

The research above calls manual work relatively insulated. Insulated from generative AI, yes.

But generative AI is not the only wave coming.

Right now the construction industry is building robots that tie rebar. Machines that fix steel faster than a human crew. No breaks. No injuries. No ruined backs in forty degree heat. I watched this industry from the inside for years and the direction is not in question. My honest read is that within years the trade might need a fifth of the people it needs today.

The same steel fixers we fought so hard to find. The dark talent we surfaced, campaigned for, upskilled, put on site.

They will be routed around again.

And here is the thing. That is not a tragedy. It is what technology has always done, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The tragedy only comes if it happens the way it usually happens. Quietly. No warning. No map. No route out.

Because those men and women have already proven the only thing that actually matters.

They changed trades once.

They retrained in three months and delivered on one of the most demanding construction sites on earth. The capability to move is already inside them.

What they will need is exactly what they needed the first time. Someone to tell them early. Somewhere the demand is going. A pathway in. A way to prove they made it.

That is the real lesson of my whole career, and I will apply it to myself too. No skill is a destination anymore. Not steel fixing. Not coding either, and I say that as someone whose whole business teaches people to build with AI.

The waves keep coming. Faster each time.

So the real question for a country is not which skill to teach thirty million people. It is whether we have permanent infrastructure for moving people from where work was to where work is going. Detection. Routing. Retraining. Proof.

Again and again, for the rest of our lives.

Nobody has built that here. Yet.

That is the layer we are building.

What We Built

2,925 builders registered in our system. Over 390 projects shipped by them. More than 30 sessions delivered with universities, government and TalentCorp, over 1,000 people trained, every seat free. Weekly sessions in KL. Activations across multiple states, where around 87% of participants walked out with a working, deployed output live on the internet, built that same day. Most of those who did not had simply come without a laptop.

Not without ability. Without a laptop.

The numbers are not the point though. The structure is.

• A build method. Vibecoding 101 takes a person from vague idea to scoped brief to first build to something hosted and public, inside one session. Their own thing. Their own URL.

• A verification ladder. Six levels, from a claimed skill all the way to verified client work. There is a project floor at every level. You cannot climb without shipping. Points alone get you nowhere.

• Proof of build as a record, not a certificate. Deployment links. Repositories. Whether it still works after thirty days.

• KD Labs for the ones who keep going. You apply to get in. Because the first build is not the finish line, it is the first data point.

One more thing, and it is deliberate. Our assessments let you use AI. All of it. • Recurring venues. Not sponsorship of one event. Rooms in every state, that run every single week, because consistency turns attendance into habit and habit turns a participant into a builder.

• Compute, cloud and AI credits. These are infrastructure, not prizes. A prototype nobody can afford to host is a screenshot.
